I am a single figure golfer (lowest 5.5!) whose home club is the Royal Jersey Golf Club. Situated in Jersey, playing the top courses is challenging as more travel is required. Played 80 of current Top 100 GB&I list. Favourite type of course are links but have thoroughly enjoyed playing 20+ of the top heathland courses in England (Surrey / Dorset / Yorkshire / Notts & Lincs) over last few years. I also admire the minimalist designs of Coore & Crenshaw and the natural scruffy look that Doak and McLay Kidd favour. My favourite resort is Bandon and my future favourite resort may well be Streamsong (I haven’t played the Black course yet, but Blue is epic and Red not far behind). Top courses played in no particular order are Chambers Bay, Pebble Beach, Tobacco Road, Muirfield, Oitavos Dunes, Carne, Les Bordes, Birkdale, Old Head, Doonbeg, Royal County Down, Pacific Dunes and TPC Sawgrass). I am passionate about rankings and believe that private / exclusive courses should not be included in any ranking as they struggle significantly to be objective ie the only people who play are members and extremely fortunate guests - so who is going to give a negative review!). Also, how “useful” is yet another stellar review of Pine Valley, Cypress Point, Augusta etc to the 99.9% of golfers? My next planned trip is to Machrihanish.

2nd Sussex - Best in Area 27th England Ranking 56th Britain & Ireland Ranking
Loved the Rye experience, including wearing a tie and jacket for lunch ! The course is very, very good. I cannot recall any weak holes (which is unusual as most courses,...

Trevose (Championship) 21/04/2017

2nd Cornwall - Best in Area 57th England Ranking
A good golf course rather than great golf course highlighted by the world class 4th hole. Holes 7 to 9 are very good. The scenery on holes 11 to 16 is ordinary as the ter...

Western Gailes 21/04/2017

4th Ayrshire & Arran - Best in Area 15th Scotland Ranking 36th Britain & Ireland Ranking
A rare course indeed that has no weak holes and all very “linksey”, which again is quite rare – western Gailes is a rare course. A short par 4 to start which is a good de...

Cruit Island 19/04/2017

Gem Ireland - Best in Area
Played Cruit Island a couple of years ago and noticed it is in the "Gem" list. It fully deserves to be in the list. Crazy, memorable and wild 9 holes. Forget the yardages...

West Lancashire 18/04/2017

6th Lancashire - Best in Area 46th England Ranking
Must be close to inclusion in the Top 100 list ! Very much a links course and the most of that ilk in the area. The dunescape is subtle rather than spectacular. Very few...

Formby 18/04/2017

3rd Lancashire - Best in Area 17th England Ranking 43rd Britain & Ireland Ranking
Similar to Hillside in terms of mix of holes and landscape types with links like (mainly first few holes on the back 9), heathland and parkland holes (7, 8, 9, 10). Prefe...

Hillside 18/04/2017

4th Lancashire - Best in Area 19th England Ranking 45th Britain & Ireland Ranking
Played on a lovely sunny day with light winds which always helps the experience. Nice gentle start which I support as a good design feature. Holes 2 and 3 use the stream...

Hayling 11/04/2017

2nd Hampshire - Best in Area 63rd England Ranking
Played Hayling in the sunshine and light winds and was an absolute joy. I liked the description that a recent reviewer used – tranquil. Pure links turf and undulating fai...

Berkshire (Red) 11/04/2017

2nd Berkshire - Best in Area 20th England Ranking 47th Britain & Ireland Ranking
In many ways the Red benefits from the unusual configuration of holes with 6 par 3s, 4s and 5s as this quirk gives the course a natural variety and interest. Undoubtedly...

Dundonald 05/04/2017

5th Ayrshire & Arran - Best in Area 26th Scotland Ranking 83rd Britain & Ireland Ranking
Im glad Dundonald has consolidated its position in the Top 100 (only Golf Monthly does not include it). Every hole is strong – my standouts include 1, 5, 10, 11, 14 & 15....
