Our Andy meets double Open Champion Padraig

21st July 2008

The annual Tesco Charity Pro-Am golf event is held at the Royal Automobile Club in Epsom on the Monday after the British Open Championship.

This year our Andy managed to catch up with the Claret Jug and the 2008 British Open Champion Padraig Harrington who was playing in the Tesco event at the lovely RAC Club.

"I really enjoyed playing Royal Birkdale in spite of the weather, and my wrist injury." Said Dubliner Padraig, who is 37 next month. Harrington is now ranked third in the world after claiming his second consecutive Open title, has also moved to the top of the European Ryder Cup standings, his Open victory came with a hefty winner's cheque of £750,000.

“Presumably Royal Birkdale now joins Carnoustie as another favourite course?” asked Andy. Padraig agreed wholeheartedly and went on to say that Royal Birkdale was presented magnificently for the tournament despite the challenging weather conditions.

A short reminisce then continued around Padraig’s majestic second shot to just four feet at the par-five 17th, which set up an eagle, cementing his win and returning the Claret Jug to the Harrington kitchen table for another year.
