Angus & Dundee Best in Region rankings updated
Angus & Dundee is home to just over twenty courses, yet eight of these layouts are currently ranked within our Top 100 for Scotland, which is a remarkably high proportion for a region with such a relatively small number of golf facilities.
There’s variety as well as quality to be found in this area, so whether you prefer to tackle a top links layout or tee it up on a challenging inland track, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to selecting a venue to play in this part of north east Scotland.
Since Top 100 Golf Courses introduced its Scottish Regional Rankings in 2012, the Top 10 positions for Angus & Dundee have remained rather static, which hopefully means we’re arranging the courses in the right order. Indeed, in this latest edition of our chart, the top nine places remain exactly the same as last time.
Unsurprisingly, the Championship course at Carnoustie leads the way at number 1. It’s not only a top regional and national track, it also appears in the upper echelons of our Britain & Ireland Top 100 and World Top 100 listings so don’t expect this seven-time Open venue to be toppled from its lofty perch any time soon.
The world famous Carnoustie course enjoys a very strong supporting cast at the top of the regional listings between positions 2 and 4: Panmure, Montrose (Medal) and Monifieth (Medal) are all highly regarded old links courses that grace the North Sea coastline as it stretches north from the Firth of Tay and each of these courses should be high on the “to play” list of links loving golfers.
Following immediately below these courses in the Angus & Dundee chart, there’s a quartet of high quality inland layouts at positions 5 to 8, starting with the beautiful parkland course at Downfield, located close to the city centre of Dundee. Much modified over time, it’s still a super test with wide, tree-lined fairways and large, heavily-contoured greens.
The Old course at Letham Grange appears next at number 6, and this delightful track is followed by Forfar’s lovely heathland layout at Cunninghill, where both Old Tom Morris and James Braid played a part in its development. In the number 8 slot, we have the Old Course at Edzell, another 18-hole layout with a sound architectural pedigree as Robert Simpson (of Royal Aberdeen’s Balgownie fame) and James Braid both had a hand in its design.
The second of Carnoustie’s three links layouts, the Burnside course, occupies the 9th spot in our chart with position 10 in the rankings taken by a new entry, Arbroath. Making way for this Old Tom Morris links course is Kirriemuir, which drops out of the rankings.
