Abama is a delight not to be missed on any golf trip to Tenerife, provided of course that you can bring yourself to part with the rather hefty 200 euro green fee. This course is possibly the least walker friendly I have ever played due to the very hilly terrain which must have made the routing of the course quite difficult for Dave Thomas and his team. Thankfully the green fee includes a buggy but a word of warning here, check that the brakes are in full working order, you will need them. Despite the massive changes in elevation the course is playable for everyone as long as you choose the correct tees to play from and show a little bit of care and attention as you plot your way around. Even if you decide to play from the 6,800 yard back tees, driver is not always the best choice particularly on the handful of holes which have narrow fairways and out of bounds in close proximity. Strategy is the key here and having had the experience of playing it once and coming off second best I would love to have another crack at it. The greens were excellent on our visit, not overly quick and probably about the right pace considering the severe slopes on many of them. The spectacular views are with you throughout the round and are most stunning on the numerous shots played downhill towards the Atlantic. Besides the lovely 4th, an excellent long par 3 over water, most of the stand out holes would be in the stretch from the 6th to the 13th. Many of these are from elevated tees and feature lakes, waterfalls rocky outcrops and great bunkering which is noticeable throughout the round. Playing in July would appear to be a good option as the courses were fairly quiet and the temperatures perfect for golf. Great fun and a memorable experience. Brian W
