Top 100 Golf Courses of Wales

Aberystwyth Golf Club was formed in 1911. The first committee took the wise choice to involve Harry Vardon - the man close to becoming that year's Champion Golfer as Vardon would win five of six Open Championships in the course of Royal St.George's - to design the layout for 18 holes. The course is located in Bryn-y-Mor ("Hill in the sea") which overlooks the town of the University of Aberystwyth as well as Cardigan Bay, the course was first opened to play in 1913, and officially opened in 1913 by the French Open Champion, George Duncan (the only from six Scottish winners in more than a 100 years to win multiple times in the contest). The original course started as par 72, with 5185 yards of distance and by the 1960s it was lengthened to 5,303 yards and the par reduced to 66. Tees were later extended as well as grass bunkers stuffed with sand, and trees were are planted all over the course to form the modern course, which today is an impressive 6,119 yards, with an average par of 70.Two of the holes that stand out that are featured on the cards include the par four, 350 yards and the 291-yard par 14th. A stream flows through the fairway to guard the putting surface on the first, while fairway bunkers protect the elevated green on the latter. Both holes providing breathtaking views of the landscape around.
