The Addington Golf Club is a rare Golden Age heathland layout in Croydon, south London, representing the only known collaboration between architects J.F. Abercromby and Harry Colt. Founded in 1913, the course stretches to over 6,300 yards across rugged, ravine-cut terrain, and has undergone an extensive restoration by Clayton, DeVries & Pont since 2020.

It was a great morning of golf exploring the place and playing Colt’s Routing which includes the “19th Hole” as 7th was out of play finishing the capping stages before putting the Grass to this par 3 which will be unreal having a very nice tee box and green allowing pin position to play from 120yds to over 200yds … quite unique!
The place went under a Deep restorenovation taking a lot of trees and bushes plus recovering original tee boxes and greens shapes plus adding some much needed irrigation. It is still in the “grow in” stages so don’t expect at least for one more year it to be in pristine shape. But with the greens shapes and contours, a very decent speed and some very nasty pin positions the Course will break you most of the times. The only personal reference is that in Between some false fronts and many missread putts, the Addignton beat me by KO even if the score was pretty decent.
“Forget about straight lines” would be my statement on this Course, either from the tee to the fairways or approach shots who never are to be aimed straight to the flag plus putts that show almost no break and then they do over a cup in a 6 footer then you realize that you need to come more than once to tame this Course. And it might be even not enought.
We Played the White Tees and you might think it is a piece of cake seeing some short par 3 (just 120yds), two really gettable par 5s and quite enough space on the fairways but let me tell you there is a lot more: 3rd breakes so Hard to the right that even at just 180yds it plays extremely difficult. 7th will be unique as mentioned before and 8th tee line is very agressive but a miss can lead to disaster. 9th again unique with a 210yds layup or a very agressive 280yds carry needed to one of many bunkerless grees with unique slopes.
19th hole Played as 9th has one of the wildest greens I have ever seen, some of the corners reming me of Winged Foot West. Yes the three par 5s are gettable on the back 9 and yes 11th is 120yds (but with a nasty green!!) but then 14th goes with a nice back view of the tall buildings, 15th and 18th two brutes of par 4s that play uphill and over 450yds plus great 13th over 230yds to another unique green and lovely 17th over the Canyon.
I can´t remember a hole not worth a photo and can’t think of one single green which was not unique. It is in the process of greatness with very strong bones and the correct path to take it there. Architecture at it’s purest state, when length will not determine how Good a hole can be. A proper Members club, a Course that demands shaping the ball both ways off the tee and also with your Irons. A stock shot and a straight line will be abscent almost all of the round so let me tell you this Course is golf as I love it to be.
Last ... check the difference of 13th before and after renovation to understand the work that has been done!
