You play through the former hunting grounds of Swedish kings (here I removed the part about the castle, as that is on the other course).The parkland routing winds between glacial granite outcrops, mature pine and birch, and open meadows once farmed by the Crown. It is one of only three 18-hole golf courses on the autonomous Åland Islands.
Sederholm's routing uses the natural terrain rather than imposing on it: fairways follow the contours between rock ridges, and several greens sit in clearings cut from the forest. From the visitor tees the golf course measures a manageable length, but accuracy matters more than power, with tree lines and granite shoulders punishing wayward tee shots. Water comes into play on a handful of holes.
The conditioning is honest Nordic parkland, firm in high summer when daylight stretches past 10pm. If you are pairing this round with the club's sister layout Slottsbanan, the Castle Course, expect a contrast: Kungsbanan is the woodland and history round, Slottsbanan the more open links-influenced one.
The obvious pairing is Ålands Golfklubb's own Slottsbanan, played from the same clubhouse at Kastelholm and an essential 36-hole day. Slightly further afield on the main island, Eckerö Golf sits roughly 40km west near the Swedish ferry terminal, a useful round to book around an arrival or departure. A sensible two-day itinerary plays Kungsbanan and Slottsbanan back-to-back at Kastelholm; a three-day trip adds Eckerö before the ferry home.
For golfers extending the trip across the Baltic, Stockholms Golfklubb and the wider Sweden golf scene are a ferry ride away, while Finland's mainland courses around Helsinki connect via Turku.
Åland is reached by ferry rather than motorway. Viking Line and Tallink Silja sail to Mariehamn from Stockholm (around 5 hours), Helsinki (around 8 hours), Turku (around 5 hours), Tallinn (around 12 hours) and Grisslehamn (2 hours), all routes carrying cars. Kastelholm and the golf club lie about 25km (16 miles) northeast of Mariehamn, a 25-minute drive on Route 2. Mariehamn Airport has limited scheduled service from Helsinki and Stockholm, sitting 30km (19 miles) from the golf course, around 30 minutes by car.
The season runs May to October, with June, July and August offering near-endless daylight and the most reliable weather. Late June through August is peak, so book tee times well ahead; shoulder months are quieter but cooler and wetter. Avoid the early-May opening weeks when the ground is still recovering from winter.
If you are already planning a Baltic ferry trip or want a golf destination with genuine historical setting, Kungsbanan justifies the journey: a Sederholm parkland layout on a royal estate, paired with Slottsbanan for a strong 36-hole day. It is not a detour for golfers based far from Stockholm or Helsinki, but for anyone within ferry range of Mariehamn it is the obvious Åland choice.
