First played the course in summer 2024 and I was excited to return to see the recent changes made. When I first visited I was very impressed by the clubhouse, friendliness and standard of the golf course but felt a few weak holes let the place down.
All I can really say is wow, what an improvement. The course flows incredibly well and the changes are brilliant. This is still a very stout, championship test but the round feels more fun and there is a nice ebb and flow to the course.
The new second hole is better oriented than the old taking you away from the clubhouse rather than back towards it. The tee shot offers plenty room left with a "tiger line" over the dogleg bunker. Making use of the old third green, this hole fits in seamlessly.
After playing up to one of the higher points on site you're presented with the new par 3 sixth hole which plays into a large but interesting green where a variety of pin positions can be imagined and plays very long into a wind howling in from the sea.
7 and 8 are two new holes which offer Aldeburgh's first par 5 and a potentially drivable 4 but not in today's wind. More sleeper bunkering has been added throughout the course and it is a nice theme which is taken advantage of here. The holes play nicely and once the surrounding flora beds in will be framed nicely.
There is a bit of a walk from the new 8th green to 9 tee which while not arduous is a bit out of context with the generally short walks from green to tees on the rest of the course.
The back 9 largely remains the same as before aside from some tidying up of bunkers and new tees on 16 which now plays as a par 5 with length added to the back tees.
Overall, the changes are brilliant and even after carding a score any batsman would be proud of I'm excited to return. As always the welcome is top drawer and the bar and pro shop staff could not be more welcoming. Even on a wild, wet and windy Sunday in February this course is an absolute delight. Looking forward to a baked out knock there in the summer.
