Why Play Altaona Golf?

Altaona Golf delivers a modern desert-style inland layout on the southern outskirts of Murcia city, built on the 890-acre Mosa Trajectum resort that traces its origins to 1999. The Paspalum Sea Spray turf gives the course a distinctive playing surface uncommon among Spanish inland layouts. No two holes play the same with the course hosting a variety of dog legs, distinctive par 3s and challenging par 5s. Altaona Golf is one of the more player friendly desert courses in the region with the majority of the holes have the option to fly or run the ball onto the green.

History of Altaona Golf

The resort is close to Baños y Mendigo, roughly 20 kilometres south of Murcia city centre, and was first developed in 1999 under the name Mosa Trajectum, which is the Roman name for the city of Maastricht in the present-day Netherlands. Interestingly, one of the original ambassadors for the resort was Dutch football icon Johan Cruyff.

Early plans envisaged 1,500 properties across the 3.6-million-square-metre site, though construction stalled with around 500 homes completed before the 2008 crisis. Blake Stirling and Marco Martin, of Stirling & Martin Golf Architects, were appointed to design the golf component.

Following a period of inactivity, new investment revived the project and rebranded the development as Altaona Golf & Country Village. The full 18-hole layout achieved complete operation in 2021, with Paspalum Sea Spray grass throughout fairways and greens to cope with the region's high summer temperatures and saline water supply.

In late 2025 The DOMUS bar and restaurant opened, boasting a plaza and terrace.

Course Layout & Playing Experience

The par-72 layout stretches to over 6,200 yards from the yellow tees and winds through the Altaona development at an elevation of between 150 and 250 metres above sea level. The gently rolling terrain — shaped by the desert foothills of the Sierra de Carrascoy — produces a walking-friendly routing with wide corridors and minimal severe gradients.

Strategically placed bunkers define the landing zones on the par-4 holes, while lakes come into play at several points around the turn and the par-3 3rd hole which, as an island green requires accurate club selection. The desert terrain outside of the fairways and rough ensures wayward shots are penalised without the layout becoming too punitive. Mid-handicap visitors are able to miss the fairway but still have a chance of hitting the green.

The practice facility includes a partly covered 15-bay driving range, putting green, chipping green, and 2 practice bunkers. Additionally, there are 2 padel courts and 1 tennis court, which by the end of 2026 will be accompanied by a gym.

The Verdict

Altaona Golf offers a well-configured modern layout for visiting golfers based in or around Murcia, with the Stirling & Martin design making intelligent use of the desert terrain without overcomplicating the routing. The Paspalum turf selection gives it a distinct playing quality relative to typical Iberian inland courses, and the Sierra de Carrascoy backdrop provides a visually memorable round. Golfers combining a visit here with a round at the adjacent El Valle Golf Resort have access to two very different desert-style experiences within a short drive of Murcia city.
