The Army Golf Club is a pretty, well maintained and extremely welcoming Woodland golf course situated on the back of Farnborough Airport. It is a course I have wanted to play for some time, not just due to the fact I live 10 minutes away and went to school in Farnborough, but because it’s lofty position within the Hampshire Golf rankings.
The course is carved through thick woodland and offers each hole wonderful seclusion. Although treelined, the fairways are generous and whilst there are a few daunting looking tee shots, once walking up the fairway, you find there was more room than you had first envisaged. There is enough variety to keep you entertained throughout the round and some very good short Par 4s which play as proper Risk/Reward holes. You can use the big stick and if you get it right you will have nothing more than a mere flick of a wedge into the green, but get it wrong and a Par is off the cards.
There may be some negative comments regarding it’s proximity to an airport, but I found this to be a quirk and one of the great things about golf is you can find differing golf courses in all different parts of the world. It’s hardly Heathrow and the aircraft that does land here are Private Jets from around the world. I can only imagine what playing this course is like when the Farnborough Airshow (second largest airshow in the world) is like. That said, if planes aren’t your thing, the airport is in view for only two holes (13 & 14).
Standout holes for me would be the 10th, a lovely mid length Par 4 with rough and a ditch running down the righthand side and a green tucked into a thick of trees and the 15th which offers an extremely generous fairway with an approach played over a pretty snaking stream guarding the green.
The course is well maintained throughout, scoreable without being a pushover and a lot of fun to play. Whilst it does sit a little below the premier courses in the county, this is certainly a course worth visiting if you are in the area.
