A very good solid course.
Played Ashridge yesterday as my 355th course in England (509th worldwide) with a mate for who it was his 1,772nd course in GB so that we could both 'add it to our lists'.
Undeniably a good quality course and club with a nice layout where from most holes you can't see another.
Some tricky greens - with quite a few having some sort of 'hidden bowl/depression' in front of the green and some good bunkering.
Pretty good condition throughout, nothing not to like.
Unusually for me I indulged myself by reading some of the history the day before - and reading of famous past professionals, the trio of designers (in particular Colonel Hotchkin of West Sussex and Woodhall Spa repute) etc we had high hopes and were expecting to be 'wowed' for our £105's.
Whilst enjoying the round and appreciating the quality of the whole set-up, we both agreed over a most welcome post-round shandy on the splendidly located balcony overlooking a number of holes, that the course was not particularly memorable or that there was anything to get too excited about - still a very good solid course though.
We played it because both we hadn't and it was a top 100 ranked course (#3 in Hertfordshire) but both felt it could have been a decent course/club anywhere and had we not known its ranking would have been a little surprised to find it ranked quite so highly.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
