Baildon
A golf course with seven holes took shape at Baildon in 1891 before Old Tom Morris extended the layout to eighteen holes a couple of years later. Pennithorne Golf Club was founded in 1896, playing on this course with members from Bradford Golf Club.
When the latter club moved to Hawksworth in 1899, Baildon Golf Club (as it became known) was left to look after the course at Moorgate.
James Braid was engaged in 1924 to remodel and extend the course, charging 12 guineas and £3-12-0 expenses to design six new holes, the 1st and 7th to 11th.
Today, the course measures just over 6,000 yards from the back tees, playing to a par of 70, with holes arranged in an out-and-back fashion. Interestingly, there are no par fives on the card until the 17th – then this three-shotter is followed by another at the last!
Notable holes include the tough, left doglegging par four 3rd (“Sconce Crag”); the equally tough par four 11th (“High Park”); and the last (and shortest) of the four par threes on the card at the 141-yard 16th (“Dennis”).

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
