Dating back to 1907, the course at Barnard Castle Golf Club is laid out on a relatively flat landscape, with four streams that run through the course coming into play at more than half the holes.
In recent years, new trees and shrubs have been planted around the layout to give more definition to holes – as well as creating more problems for golfers who hit wayward shots off target.
Drainage ditches have also been dug, meaning an aerial approach must be played at several holes because the green is guarded by narrow channels cutting across the fairway in front of the putting surface.
Extending to 6,438 yards from the back tees, the course occupies a 115-acre property on a rolling landscape, playing to a par of 73 (37 out then 36 in), with holes set out as two returning nines.
Highlights include the right veering par five 6th (rated stroke index 2); the tough, left bending par four 10th; and the narrow par three finishing hole with out of bounds on the left and two front bunkers protecting the home green.
