I was fortunate enough to play The Dunes around the time of its opening, when it left me in awe. Twenty-odd years later, I was concerned that memory might have made it better than reality, but I need not have worried. If anything, I'm more impressed now than back then. This is indisputably the best course in Australia, and I've played all the contenders. After two nice warmup holes, at every tee thereafter it's hard not to say "Wow" out loud. On most tees, there is a strategic choice to be made. The course follows the landscape, it is tough but fair, and the greens are large and with natural contours. It is a superb test, I wish I could play it more regularly but the remoteness adds to the pleasure. The standout holes below are just examples, there are 18 one could have included.
