Barrington Hills

Located 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the course at Barrington Hills Country Club is a George O’Neil and Joseph Roseman design that dates back to 1921. Tom Doak’s Renaissance Golf Design has consulted here for a number of years.

Tom Doak commented as follows in The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses: “An overlooked small gem in the Chicago district, Barrington Hills is a rock-solid layout with a rare set of rolling greens as the foundation of an excellent test. There’s nothing flashy about it, and no signature hole to hang its hat on, but there aren’t many courses in Chicago with more day-today interest than this one.”

“The front nine runs out to the north, across Oak Knoll Road,” writes Daniel Wexler in The Chicago Area Golf Guide, “and is highlighted by a trio of quite varied par 4s; the 338-yard 2nd, the 429-yard uphill 3rd and the 425-yard 6th, whose fairway is severely pinched by a cluster of four Doak bunkers. The slightly shorter inward half then offers a pair of strong par 3s prior to closing with the 425-yard dogleg left 18th, whose corner is pinched by several invasive trees. Though Barrington Hills has seldom been held up among the cream of Chicagoland courses, in a highly competitive market, there are many who rate this genuine hidden gem.”
