Barton Creek Country Club (Coore Crenshaw Cliffside)
Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore's minimalist masterpiece integrates seamlessly into the Texas Hill Country terrain. This championship layout challenges golfers with massive, undulating Bermuda greens and strategic approach shots across running creeks. The course epitomises the design philosophy that "nature is the best architect" for an authentic golf holiday experience.
When two-time Masters Champion and Austin native Ben Crenshaw partnered with architect Bill Coore to design this course in 1991, he adhered to his fundamental belief that "the best architect is nature." Coore and Crenshaw Inc. was established in 1986, "based upon the shared philosophy that traditional, strategic golf is the most rewarding". The Cliffside course emerged as one of four championship layouts at Barton Creek Resort, representing the minimalist movement's approach to golf course architecture.
The partnership between Crenshaw and Coore proved particularly fitting for this Texas Hill Country setting. Through their approach, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, along with architect Tom Doak, are credited with founding the current 'minimalist' movement in golf course architecture. Their design philosophy emphasised working with the existing landscape rather than imposing artificial features upon it.
The course underwent extensive renovation as part of Barton Creek Resort's major expansion in 2019, which saw improvements to turf conditions, bunker reconstruction, and enhanced course conditioning. These renovations maintained the original Coore/Crenshaw design principles while modernising the playing surfaces to championship standards.

The layout showcases the architects' restraint and respect for the natural topography. Rather than creating dramatic artificial features, Coore and Crenshaw allowed the rolling hills, natural plateaus, and native vegetation to dictate the course's character. This approach creates a golf experience that feels intrinsic to the Texas Hill Country landscape.
The Cliffside course challenges golfers through strategic design rather than length, measuring just over 6,600 yards from the championship tees. Wide, sweeping fairways lined by densely packed trees provide forgiveness off the tee for novice players, whilst still demanding precision from seasoned golfers. The trees will devour errant shots, but the generous landing areas reward well-struck drives.
The course's defining characteristic lies in its massive, undulating Champion Bermuda greens. These putting surfaces come in all shapes and sizes, but consistently challenge players with their substantial dimensions and complex contours. It's fitting that one of golf's legendary putters would create a course where every putt must be earned through careful reading and execution.
The course's highlight emerges at the finishing hole, where golfers face an exciting climax playing slightly uphill. Approach shots must carry a running creek to reach a low-lying green seemingly etched into the hillside. This dramatic conclusion exemplifies the course's integration with the natural landscape features.
Five challenging par-3s provide variety throughout the round, each demanding different club selections and approach strategies. The par-3s particularly showcase Coore and Crenshaw's ability to create memorable holes without resorting to artificial theatrics.
