Berkeley Hall (North)
The Golf Club at Berkeley Hall offers three world-class — and quite unique — touchpoints for comparison in its approach: Winged Foot, Seminole, and Riviera. Well then! Tom Fazio must have felt some incredible pressure when constructing two 18-hole loops for the project, the North and the South.
Located inland from the golf destination of Hilton Head, the course roams about lowland marshes, which provide ample ammo for Fazio to challenge the best players. Although the fauna seen throughout the round will be quite entertaining, one thing that players will not see is housing. Although Berkeley Hall is the centerpiece of a residential development, one thing it shares in common with all of the aspirational clubs listed above is that homes won’t be seen during a round.
There’s little natural land movement in these coastal regions but Fazio uses his means to create more intriguing terrain around his green complexes, including No. 8, a short par three with a significant drop-off for those who attack the peninsular green and miss.
