Second only to the 18 holes on the Black layout at the five-course Bethpage State Park complex, the Red course is known to some as “Baby Black,” giving ample indication of the challenge that awaits here.

Played the Red a few times in 2023 and the layout has been helped by more attention to various key design elements. I think the Red still suffers from greensites that are satisfactory but hardly the most complex in terms of internal movements - both on the actual greens and just off of them..
The opening hole deserves all of the plaudits it gets. The bulk of the holes do test driving skills but the general topography of the Red is fairly vanilla. The stir the blood qualities of the big brother Black Course is missing for much of the time one plays on the Red. To be clear - there are moments but the middle of the Red simply is ordinary.
The ending few holes do improve but I think the hype on the Red is a bit exaggerated. A good layout but hardly approaching the legendary status of its nearby big brother.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
