Why Play Beverley and East Riding Golf Club?
Beverley and East Riding Golf Club occupies historic common land where grazing cattle roam freely across the fairways, making fenced greens and livestock-aware etiquette a genuinely distinctive part of the golfing experience. Founded in 1889, it is Yorkshire's oldest inland golf club and sits within sight of Beverley Minster, one of England's great medieval churches.
History of Beverley and East Riding Golf Club
Beverley and East Riding Golf Club was formed in 1889, making it the oldest inland club in Yorkshire. The club was inaugurated at the Holderness Hotel, with Lord Londesborough serving as the first president, a position he held until 1911. The original course operated as a nine-hole layout on the Beverley Westwood pasture lands.
The club closed in 1947 following financial and transport difficulties in the post-war years, before reopening and expanding to its current 18-hole configuration on the Westwood. The course is praised for the condition of its links-style fairways and fast-running greens.
Course Layout & Playing Experience
Beverley and East Riding Golf Club plays to a par of 69 and stretches to just under 6,000 yards from the back tees across the rolling terrain of Beverley Westwood. The routing makes full use of the natural contours of the common land, with named holes reflecting the landscape: The Gallop, Mill Vale, Quarry Hole, and the closing hole, Anti Mill, named for the historic windmill adjacent to the clubhouse.
The layout features five par threes including The Whins at the 16th, which plays to over 200 yards from the back tees. The par-five 3rd, Mill Vale, is the longest hole on the course, while the 463-yard par-four 2nd, The Hummocks, is the most demanding. The course sits on shared public land, meaning dog walkers and grazing cattle are regular features, with all greens protected by low wire fences.
The club itself describes the course as offering a blend of parkland, heathland and links terrain, taking advantage of the rolling fairways and delivering views of Beverley Minster throughout the round.
The Verdict
Beverley and East Riding Golf Club is an authentically individual golf venue: common land with free-roaming cattle, five par threes across undulating heathland, and the backdrop of a medieval minster. Visitors seeking something genuinely different from the standard parkland experience will find it here.
