Big Easy Ranch (The Covey)

The Covey at Big Easy Ranch opened in March 2023 as the centrepiece of a 2,000-acre sporting estate in Columbus, Texas. Architect Chet Williams crafted this championship layout to complement the property's existing nine-hole par-three course, creating a comprehensive golf destination that honours the natural Texas Hill Country terrain.

Williams designed The Covey to maximise the site's unique topographical features, incorporating dramatic elevation changes of up to 80 feet from tee to fairway. The routing weaves through tree-lined corridors and natural creek systems, enhanced with waterfalls that add both strategic and aesthetic elements to the playing experience.

The par-72 championship course stretches across the rolling countryside, offering multiple tee configurations to accommodate players of varying abilities. Zeon Zoysia fairways and rough provide optimal playing conditions suited to the Texas climate, while TifEagle greens deliver consistent putting surfaces throughout the season.

The design philosophy emphasises strategic shot-making opportunities across varied terrain. Williams positioned fairways to utilise natural elevation changes and existing mature trees, creating playing corridors that demand thoughtful course management rather than pure power.

The Covey's character emerges from its seamless integration with the Texas Hill Country landscape. Rolling fairways navigate between established post oak and water oak groves, whilst natural dry creek beds - enhanced with running water features - create both visual drama and strategic challenges.

The routing takes advantage of elevation changes to create varied shot requirements and spectacular vistas across the property. Each hole presents distinct challenges, from elevated tee shots that showcase the surrounding countryside to approach shots over water features and creek systems.
