The municipal course sitting in downtown Smithfield first opened its front nine for play in 1963 along the bench of the Bear River range that stretches northward into Idaho. The front nine’s main topographical feature comes from the barranca cutting through the otherwise benign piece of property and makes for the strongest stretch of holes from the par-5 fifth to the eighth. This stretch of golf provides a unique variety of holes and shots forcing players to deal with the hazard from both the tee and on approach culminating in the well framed teeshot of the dogleg left par-4 eighth.
The back nine, opening in 1977, ventures to the more dramatic piece of land as the course winds through a sunken hollow before climbing back to the clubhouse at the green complex of the par-5 eighteenth. While the holes in the lowest portion of the property might seem more simple of straightforward, the variety of shape and nuance of the holes will be evident to those with an eye for architectural side of the game.
