Breadsall Priory Country Club (Priory)

The Breadsall Priory estate dates back to the 13th century, when it was established as an Augustinian priory. The original structure was largely demolished and a private home built on the site, so now there’s only a single arch left of the monastic buildings. The house currently operates as a Marriott hotel, servicing two 18-hole courses named Priory and Moorland.

The Priory layout was built by developer David Cox in the late 1970s, with the Donald Steel-designed Moorland course following in the early 1990s. Measuring just over 6,000 yards in length and playing to a par of 70, the Priory course is configured as two returning nines, each playing to a par of 35, with only one par five hole designated on each loop.

Feature holes include the short par three 6th, played to a heavily sand-fortified green, and the short par four 9th, which doglegs severely right to the green. On the back nine, holes 15 and 16 in the southeast corner of the property are demanding, long par fours, followed by the signature par three 17th hole, where the green is guarded by sand to the front and a ditch at the back.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
