Bryan Park (Champions)

Rees Jones became notorious for his renovation of Bethpage Black leading up to the 2001 U.S. Open, where only one player (Tiger Woods) cracked par. The architect doesn’t shy from creating monsters for the more-common man, however, as can be seen in the Champions course at Bryan Park, which hosted the 2010 U.S. Amateur Links Championship.

Jones dotted the thin fairways with nearly 100 bunkers to challenge the inaccurate, but much of the challenge is provided by Nature, with seven holes bordering Lake Townsend. Granted, these holes also offer beautiful views... but this opinion often varies depending on whether you’re near the water or in the water.

No. 13 offers the most waterfront property, playing more than 470 yards around a dogleg right, with the lake hugging the inside. At least Jones is kind enough to place some additional bunkering at the elbow so that your mishit may end up sandy, instead of wet. The par three at No. 14 intimidates with the accuracy required: A large bunker fronts the green, 230 yards away. But hit too far over that bunker? Roll off the putting surface into the lake behind it. Good luck!

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
