Opened in October 2016, Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club is the first of its kind in Asia – a thrilling 18-hole par three executive course that JMP Design built on a dramatic limestone ridge. It simply must be played for sheer fun if visiting Bali.

It's hard to know what to expect when travelling to a par 3 course: will it be a bit 'mickey mouse' or will it be a decent golf course, just shorter? Does it cater to only time poor tourists playing cartball 'golf', or can golfers enjoy a challenge?

In the case of Bukit Pandawa I'm happy to report that it is the latter, admittedly with golf carts.

The course is still fairly new which means it's in good condition (in 2022) and there didn't appear to be any pandemic-related reductions in service or quality. The clubhouse is quite striking, being constructed from a dark grey stone that sits well with the weather coral outcroppings featured throughout the course. The holes from the back tees are an interesting mix of a few short iron par 3s, mostly mid-iron holes and then two longer holes where many will use a wood from the tee. The longest was 225m if I recall correctly, but plays downhill. My 4-wood came up just short.

The design is interesting, with enough sand and water in play to provide a visual contrast as well as penalising poor strokes. Mostly however, the greens are large and forgiving enough that you can take dead aim on the pin.

An enjoyable afternoon.
