Located next to the University of Vermont campus, Burlington Country Club was founded in 1924 and by 1930 it had in play the only 18-hole course that Donald Ross ever designed in the state of Vermont. For seventy years nothing much changed here until the layout was restored by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry in the late 1990s.
In The American Private Golf Club Guide, Daniel Wexler writes: “the layout offers rather a unique routing, with both nines forming counter-clockwise circles, in nearly concentric rings save for three holes (and a crossover) in the southwest corner.
The author continues: “It is a moderately difficult track whose most interesting holes nearly all fall where a pair of lakes sit along its western boundary. These include the 382-yard 4th (with water right), the 325-yard 11th (with water in front) and the 416-yard 15th which features a final lakeside green.”

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
