Burnham & Berrow (Channel)

Burnham & Berrow was founded in 1890 and a number of top architects have had a hand in refining the initial 18-hole course that was originally laid out by Charles Gibson.

Amongst them, Herbert Fowler (a member) extended the layout in 1910; Hugh Alison (another member) carried out improvements between the Wars; and Alister MacKenzie advised on a couple of hole modifications in 1922.

Following the recession of the high tide line to the west of the property after World War II, the club was able to call in Fred Hawtree to design the Channel nine – with holes weaving around a salt marsh – and this layout opened for play in 1977.

Extending to 2,839 yards from the back markers, this links plays to a par of 35, with only one par five on the card at the 473-yard 4th. The first four holes play away from the clubhouse, with Berrow Beach to the left, before the routing then brings players back towards the clubhouse.

Highlight holes include the very narrow par four 6th (rated stroke index 1) and the very short par three 8th, which plays from an elevated tee position to a green nestled at the foot of a small sandhill.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
