Typically, when an architect returns to a site to add an additional nine, the newer holes can be expected to play less exciting, as the prime property has already been claimed. Not so at Callawassie Island; Tom Fazio returned eight years after laying out the Dogwood and Palmetto nines to install the Magnolia, which has gone on to be the most celebrated of the three. It’s played along with the Dogwood for the club’s most celebrated 18.

Magnolia is interestingly the longest course of the three as well. Part of its appeal lies in its routing around the south side of the island, which is more open than the tighter north side. The closing hole at Magnolia hearkens to the closer at nearby Harbour Town, with an outpost of fairway along the harbor for those who want to get the best angle at the green.

Callawassie Island is sandwiched between golf-loving communities; cross the bridge from Chechessee Creek to reach Callawassie, and then continue to the next island to find Old Tabby Links.

The combination of Callawassie's courses hosted the 2021 Big East college golf championship.
