Carlyon Bay

Established in 1912, Carlyon Bay Golf Club sits on the cliffs that rise above St Austell Bay, offering spectacular views along the Cornish coastline.

The first 13 holes are a part of the shoreline, and holes 14-17 are played on the opposite side of the railway line. The closing hole, the 18th ("Arch") brings players back to the clubhouse, which is located above the beach.

The layout is able to be extended to 6,400 yards. The course is played at a par 72 (35 out, 37 in) and just one hole of par 5 (the 504 yard "Main Line") on the outside half.

The highlight is the par 4 second ("Tregrehan") which requires the blind second shot on an elevated green that is sloped from the front and back and the par three that is downhill sixth ("Polmear") that has an offset green, which is protected by bunkers.

In the inner part, the 533-yard 16th ("Fir Copse") is a difficult par five, which is scored scoring index 1 which is a railway that runs through the middle of the hole to the left, and the fairway dwindling until it gets to the green.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
