Castlerock (Mussenden)
Castlerock is a village on the sea situated within the Causeway Coast. Castlerock is located on the Causeway Coast. Mussenden course (named for the nearby temple, situated at an incredibly high point on the cliff's edge) is located at the mouth of River Bann where it meets the powerful Atlantic Ocean. On a clear day you can see the Isle of Islay is visible in the north in the West, are the gentle hills that make up Donegal.
The club was first established in the year 1901. It was initially nine holes, but was expanded up to 18 holes by 1908 thanks to the famous Scottish clubmaker Ben Sayers. The course was redesigned in 1925. Harry Colt made further adjustments to the course.
In close proximity to its famous neighbours, Portstewart and Royal Portrush, Castlerock Golf Club is just as good and is sure to please. It is among the most difficult links courses in the world with some fantastic holes. Make sure you play within your handicap and you'll be doing well.
The influence of the wind is significant and if it is blowing keep your helmet. It will certainly affect your score. This is so much so that in 2001, at the Ireland PGA International, Paul McGinley set the record for the course at 64, on a day of calm. On the previous day in the event that there was a wind at its peak and the eventual winner, Des Smyth, was the only player to score higher than par. Similar to the majority of links courses, it is essential to maintain your golf ball. Your short game needs to be top-quality as these greens can be quick, even in winter months. Concentration is essential throughout the entire course since there are no holes that are easy to play at Castlerock.
The 4th, which is a 200-yard par 3 is the hole most well-known by the club known as "Leg O' Mutton". The tee-shot plays with a green elevated that has rail lines running across the entire long length to the left and a meandering burn that runs diagonally from right to left. Avoid trying to run or bump your approach shot towards the par four hole, which is a short par 4 and the hidden burn is across the green's front. The 15th hole is a fantastic par five that is referred to as "Homewards". Blind tee shots need to be played slightly left of center, which gives you an excellent chance to score comfortably. The 18th hole is an excellent closing hole. It's a tough dogleg on the right side and the highest double-tiered green on the course.
James W Finegan on the course: "The entire course lies well between the railway line and the river as well as the ocean... A number of holes meander through the inviting dunes however, a lot of them are on less appealing terrain, including those is the infamous and significantly inland fourth... It is a seemingly penal and rather boring hole requires a straight, solid shot." From the place where Golf is Great The most beautiful courses in Scotland as well as Ireland.
We suggest a trip the course at Castlerock in a three-way deal (with Portstewart and Royal Portrush). In 2003, film star Michael Douglas visited Castlerock and was awed by the course. an unforgiving attraction You could say!
Castlerock also has a nine-hole course dubbed the Bann. The layout is comparable with the Mussenden course and the par five 5th hole is regarded as "one one of the more picturesque hole in Irish golf" We can't argue with that. The club is"twinned by Niagara Golf Club, considered to be the oldest established courses of golf (1875).
In 2017, Martin Hawtree was commissioned to remodel his Mussenden course. Phase one of the renovation began in October of the same year, with improvements to greens and bunkers (under the supervision SOL Construction). SOL Construction) across six holes. Phase one was completed in April 2018, and phase two was completed over this winter season of 2019/2020. installing new bunkers, sloping off areas, and mounding around some greens, as well as the introduction of new tees on the remaining three holes.
