William J. Rockefeller laid out the first golf course on Catawba Island in 1928, but the course in play today at the Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton is a 2008 Arthur Hills and Steve Forrest creation, which skirts around a residential development near the shores of Lake Erie.

Catawba Island

Ohio, despite having a large section of land bordering Lake Erie, has a peculiar absence of golf on the shoreline (at least, when compared to Michigan). This alone is what makes Catawba Island Club stand out from other courses in the state. It's a simple to drive around: Catawba has not been an island since the locals built an infrastructure connection to the mainland a long time in the past.

The purpose of the club is to cater to the needs of homeowners who own second homes within the region, and like golf courses that serve the same purpose in Florida the course Arthur Hills offers an enthralling second-home course. The course is dotted with water hazards with both natural and manmade. One of the most challenging areas of the property is the southeastern corner of Lake Erie that creeps under the roadway that Hills constructed on three holes. No. 14 requires a 110-yard traverse over the inlet, which leads to a peninsular green surrounded with three sides of water. Hills continues the strategy on the following hole, which requires 150 yards to carry over an open green angled towards the lake's shoreline. In addition, the fairway at No. 16 is lined with a lake on the left.

The course isn't too long, with 6,700 yards, however it could require an additional sleeves of balls.
