A disappointing experience of the Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor Resort.

As an avid golfer, I had high expectations when teeing off at the Twenty Ten Course, famous for hosting the 2010 Ryder Cup. However, my experience fell short of any reasonable expectation, leaving me with a sense of disappointment.

While the course's reputation precedes it as a championship layout, the condition on the day of my visit was not up to par. The fairways were completely soaked, and it really should have been deemed unplayable. Friends have raved about Celtic Manor, and I was a bit skeptical, as modern-day Ryder Cup courses in the UK have not always impressed me. I wanted to give TwentyTen a shot, as my wife was looking for a spa day, and this was the perfect pairing. I should have just hung out in the bar.... 

Furthermore, the design of the course, while challenging, felt uninspired and lacked the strategic variety I had hoped for. I'm not a huge fan of water holes, but sometimes they can add depth to a course, again, this seemed like an average use of water... at best! Many of the holes seemed to blend together, with repetitive features and limited opportunities for creativity in shot-making. As a result, the round felt monotonous and failed to provide any real desire to brag to friends after playing. 

There was a par three challenge just before the halfway hut where you could pay ten quid to hit and win a membership for a hole-in-one or hit the green and win another round. My mate and I both hit the green, won a free round, and I'm pretty sure I'll be giving that round away to someone else. A few holes had some interesting backdrops with rolling hills, but I think the soaked conditions just threw my experience off so much that I can't recommend playing here unless you are getting a great deal. 

The only saving part of the day, the Twenty Ten clubhouse was great, and the pro shop was super nice and provided us with some pretty sweet swag. I think they realized the conditions were un-sat and I certainly appreciate their efforts to balance the day on a positive note. It's a Ryder Cup course and one that is most memorable for wet conditions during the weekend. I can't imagine how the pros dealt with those conditions, not the rain, but the fact that the drainage was non-existent. 

In conclusion, my round at the Twenty Ten Course left much to be desired. Despite its illustrious history and reputation, the disappointing course conditions and uninspired design really leave me with little to say on a positive note. For those considering a visit to Celtic Manor Resort, I would recommend tempering expectations and exploring other courses across Wales that will offer a more fulfilling golfing experience.
