Chambers Creek's Tom Lehman-designed course offers a revolutionary golf experience in Willis, Texas. The links-style layout features adaptable holes playing as par 3s, 4s, or 5s across rolling terrain. Located within a comprehensive active adult community, it provides an innovative approach to modern golf course design and play.
In the rolling hills of Willis, Texas, just north of Houston, Chambers Creek represents a bold new vision for American golf. Tom Lehman's innovative design philosophy has created something genuinely different: a course that challenges traditional notions of how golf should be played whilst embracing the natural beauty of the Texas landscape.
Chambers Creek opened in 2023 as the centrepiece of a 1,100-acre master-planned community developed by Caldwell Communities. The project represents more than three decades of development expertise applied to some of Texas's most beautiful natural terrain. Fred Caldwell, CEO of Caldwell Companies, spoke with passion: "Chambers Creek reflects 30 years of our commitment to excellence. We've been gifted with some of Texas' most beautiful land and have crafted what we believe will be its finest active adult community."
The course designer, Tom Lehman, brought his unique perspective as both a former world number one golfer and accomplished architect to the project. Lehman's design philosophy emphasises creating fun, challenging experiences for golfers of all abilities whilst respecting the natural landscape. His approach at Chambers Creek reflects his belief that modern golf should challenge skilled players without intimidating recreational golfers.
The Lehman Park golf course spans 93 acres of naturally rolling terrain that Lehman describes as remarkable for Texas. The design philosophy centres on adaptability - each of the nine holes can be played as par 3s, 4s, or 5s depending on tee selection, creating multiple playing experiences within a single layout.
The course begins and ends with par 5s – the first hole's green is played downhill and is reachable in two, while the ninth is entirely uphill. The routing utilises natural elevation changes, with four of the holes featuring blind tee shots, and positioning on the lightning-fast greens is paramount.
Despite appearing straightforward at first glance, the course reveals its complexity through strategic design elements. There are just seven bunkers throughout the routing, but they are positioned well and are not missed or needed to create difficulty. The emphasis on green contours and natural terrain features creates a challenge without relying heavily on artificial hazards.
Lehman's design draws inspiration from Scottish links golf, adapted for the Texas climate and terrain. Drawing inspiration from the way the game was originally played in Scotland, the course features wide fairways and large greens that encourage ground game approaches whilst providing options for aerial attacks.
The most distinctive feature is the course's unprecedented flexibility. A unique feature of the course is that each hole also has a dedicated, artificial turf tee so that it can be played as a par 3, with no hole longer than 150 yards. This allows for shorter, more informal rounds whilst maintaining the strategic elements that make each hole interesting.
The green complexes represent Lehman's philosophy of rewarding precision whilst offering recovery options. Lightning-fast putting surfaces demand careful approach positioning, but generous surrounds provide opportunities for creative short game recovery. The design balances challenge for accomplished players with forgiveness for higher handicappers.
