Charmeil
Laid out on the floodplain of the Isère river, just outside Grenoble, the course at Domaine de Charmeil is a late 1980s Jeremy Pern design that was built around a disused gravel quarry. It’s been used in the past to host events on the Ladies European Tour, most notably as a qualifying school for those in search of playing rights for the following season’s schedule.
Routed in an out-and-back fashion, the course measures just over 6,000 metres from the tips, playing to a par of 73, with only one par three on the front nine at the 7th and a back nine configured as three par threes, three par fours and three par fives. Highlights include the left doglegged par four 9th and the short par three 14th, where water threatens along the right side of the hole.
The Peugeot Golf Guide describes the course as follows in this edited extract:
“With half the holes in an oak forest and the other half in open country, this is a fairly flat but never tedious course. Architect Jeremy Pern is fond of links layouts and shows it here, with carefully shaped mounds and the widespread use of bunkers in all shapes and sizes. Nearly all the water is natural, supplied by a lake of some seven acres, which adds to the pretty landscape.”
