Pete Dye routed the golf course at Chatham Hills round an 800-acre real estate development to the north of Westfield in Hamilton County, with the first tee shot struck in earnest two years after construction began in late 2014.
Chatham Hills Country Club was established as part of a real estate development north of Indianapolis, but Pete Dye was given plenty of land — 800 acres — for him to route the 7,200-yard championship course (the property also includes a nine-hole par three course, also designed by Dye).
Dye is synonymous with the region, having laid out many designs around the region. Perhaps to reassure his one-of-a-kind brand identity, he worked to establish different aesthetic and strategic themes at his courses in the area. The bunker style is uniform across Chatham Hills, consisting of thin strips of sand that resemble, well, graves. They are certainly located strategically, and dreams of birdie will go there to die if players travel just a little bit off target.
Those going for eagle may find those dreams even more dramatically quashed, as lakes located at strategic points exist to supply penalties for those who get too ambitious upon approach.
The course is one of Dye’s most recent designs, having opened during 2014.
