Chippenham
Formed in 1896, Chippenham Golf Club started out with a 7-hole layout which was later extended to nine holes before Harry Colt was called in to expand the course to eighteen holes in 1932.
After World War II, only thirteen holes were restored and it took until 1976 before an 18-hole course was brought back into play. More recently, the layout was remodelled by Matt Maryon in 2012, when he introduced seven new holes.
Today, the course measures 6,348 yards from the rear tees, playing to a par of 72, and holes are set out as two returning nines. Water hazards feature at three holes, most prominently at the left doglegging par five 14th.
And with three par threes, three par fours and three par fives on the front nine, the same consecutive par is played only once on the outward half, at the par four 7th and 8th.
Holes of note include the shortest of the par threes at the 134-yard 6th (with a long, crescent-shaped bunker protecting the front of the green); and the right veering par four 15th which is rated stroke index 1 on the scorecard.
A multi-phase upgrade project at the club concluded in 2023 with Stuart Rennie of PangaeGolf Architecture overseeing a bunker renovation and green remodelling scheme.
World Top 100 Golf Courses
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
