James Braid was engaged to design the new layout and the build was to be overseen by the club’s newly appointed professional, named Johnson, who had worked with Braid at Walton Heath. Unfortunately, he lasted only a month in post.
The layout eventually opened in 1910 and the occasion was marked with a couple of exhibition matches involving Braid and Harry Vardon on 5th May. In the 18-hole match play morning game, Braid won 4&3, finishing his round with a score of 74 to Vardon’s 79.
Twenty-five years later, Braid returned to advise on improvements for what was then an 11-hole course, following the release of holes to crop production during the Great War. In more recent times, the course was altered in the mid-1990s due to the construction of a local road, with three new holes introduced.
