Colorado Golf Club
Colorado Golf Club only opened its tees to play in 2007, but it's already a huge hit. It was designed by the famous Bill Coore and Ben duo of Coore and Crenshaw who's design philosophy is to keep in mind the traditional golf courses of that "Golden age of architecture", Colorado was destined to succeed... Just take a look at the course's history. Sand Hills.
The site is spread across over 1,700 acres of former ranch for horses The space is not available on the Colorado Golf Club. The club already has won its first major championship in 2010: the Senior PGA Championship (won by Tom Lehman after a three-way play-off against David Frost and Fred Couples) due to the fact that "the venue has plenty of space to host the infrastructure to host an event of this magnitude," according to the Senior PGA Championship director. If this isn't enough for such young club, in 2013, the Solheim Cup was hosted at Colorado and resulted in a win of 18-10 for Europe and was it was the very only European Solheim Cup win on US ground. So how is the course decent?
As per Juli Inkster LPGA Tour player, "It's a fantastic match-play course that makes a wonderful Solheim Cup venue. There are many strategies and possibilities available. It is possible to make a hole happen on every hole. Then you'll have the risk-reward par 5s on 15 and 16 as well as an amazing par 3 at 17. It's a great test for everyone. When you add the huge sports city of Denver I am sure this event will be fantastic."
Ben Crenshaw said of his creation: "We tried very hard to connect the holes to the ground. In this sense the holes will play out different, featuring interesting designs for the greens and bunkers. We decided to let the golf course run through the terrain."
In The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, Tom Doak reckons that "the overcrowding by housing (which is difficult to conceal in this deserted landscape) keeps it from providing the true golfing experience we had hoped for.. Our favorite holes are the shorter par-4 3rd hole and the 13th, and the par-3 6th, which allows a long dunk towards the green. The water feature that gurgles on the 16th (set in a stunning natural canyon) hinders the enjoyment of the golf course."
