Commonwealth Golf Club, situated in the heart of Victoria’s famed Sandbelt region, is quietly becoming one of the premier golf destinations in the area. With design credit owed to multiple individuals over time, Commonwealth has evolved into a thoughtful, well-balanced test of golf and the sense of heritage is clear from the moment you arrive.Step into the spectacular clubhouse, and you’ll notice something special:changing rooms that mirror those of Oakmont complete with brown cabinets, wooden benching, and scuff marks left behind by generations of players. It tells a story before you even tee off.Out on the course, the round begins with a gentle, short par-4 similar in feel to Victoria Golf Club that nicely eases you into the round. After that, you’re straight into a scorable par-5, giving players an early chance to pick up some momentum.Interestingly, your first par-3 doesn’t appear until the 7th hole, which allows for a steady rhythm to build through the early part of the round. One of the standout features at Commonwealth is the subtle defence of the greens. It’s not always about what’s surrounding them but what happens once you’re on them. You can feel the tilt under your feet. Slopes run front to back, side to side testing your green-reading and putting precision on every single hole.My favourite hole on the course is the 8th.Framed by trees left and right, a well-positioned fairway bunker creeps in from the left side. But the magic comes after your tee shot as you approach a raised green, tightly guarded by classic Sandbelt bunkering, and the clubhouse rising in the background. And then, the finishing stretch.Commonwealth closes strong, with scoring opportunities down the stretch perfect for match play and creating exciting finishes. It’s one of those courses that feels fair but firm. While it may not sit as high in the rankings just yet, don’t be surprised if that changes soon.If you get the chance don’t miss it.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
