Founded in 1894, County Cavan Golf Club is one of the oldest clubs in Ireland. Although the tree-lined course measures a modest 6,164 yards from the back tees this par 70 parkland layout has been tantalising golfers for years.

County Cavan

Formed in 1894, County Cavan Golf Club started out with a modest 9-hole layout in the grounds of a local politician, Thomas Lough, at Killynebber. The club moved to its current location in 1920, with another 9-hole track brought into play. This course was extended to eighteen holes in 1975 then Arthur Spring upgraded the layout at the start of the new millennium.

In Kevin Markham’s book Hooked: an amateur’s guide to the golf courses of Ireland the author writes: “there is plenty of variety to the golf design, in terms of hole shapes, bunkers and greens. The start is certainly entertaining with a roller-coaster hole taking you through two huge troughs. By the time you walk off the 4th you will be thinking it’s hilly but it calms down after that.”

Extending to 5,627 metres from the back markers, the course is laid out as two returning nines, each of which plays to a par of 35, with par five holes at the 7th and 17th. Fairways and greens and lightly bunkered and there are no water hazards to speak of, apart from a few ditches. Highlight holes include tough par fours at the 3rd and 16th (rated stroke index 2 and 1, respectively).
