Situated between Westerport Bay and Port Phillip Bay, the course at Devilbend Golf Club was developed in the early 1970s with fairways routed around an undulating landscape and water coming into play at serveral holes.
Today, the layout extends to 5,900 meters from the back tees, playing to a par of 71 (36 out then 35 in), with holes arranged as two sets of returning 9-hole loops. Ponds of various sizes affect the playing strategy on the front nine at #1 (right of the fairway), #2 (left of the tee), #3 (front right of the green) and #5 (right of the fairway). There’s also another little lake to be wary of when tackling the tough par four 12th on the back nine.
Other highlights include the stretch of par fours that conclude the round, starting at the 333-metre 14th (which bends right to an offset, heavily-bunkered green in the southeast corner of the property) and ending with the 308-metre 18th, where the fairway eases left and uphill to the home green – and with a stroke index of 10, there’s a reasonable chance of finishing with a birdie if sand hazards can be avoided to the front left and back right of the putting surface.
