Diablo Country Club
Nestled at the foot of iconic Mount Diablo in the East Bay hills of Contra Costa County, Diablo Country Club is one of Northern California's most historically significant and visually arresting private golf clubs. Founded in 1914 on the grounds of an 1874 country estate once owned by the railroad barons of the Big Four, the club occupies a site steeped in California history — and its golf course matches that heritage in every respect.
The course was designed by two of the Golden Age's most celebrated architects: Jack Neville, co-creator of Pebble Beach, and William Watson, designer of the Olympic Club. Diablo is the only golf course in the world to bear their combined work, with each man designing separate nines. The original routing has been faithfully preserved across more than a century of play, a remarkable achievement that speaks to the quality and enduring relevance of their design. Recent stewardship of the layout has been equally impressive: following a $12 million golf course renovation completed in 2020 — overseen by architect Todd Eckenrode and including new tees, greens, and bunkers, along with a full conversion to Bermuda grass fairways — Golf Inc. named Diablo's course the United States' Renovation of the Year for 2021. Golf Magazine has since ranked it among the 50 Best Courses in the West and among the top 30 in California.
Stretching to 6,761 yards from the championship tees and playing to a par of 72, the course blends classic parkland conditions with a hint of links-inspired play. The fairways roll and open across a landscape shaped by the natural drama of Mount Diablo's foothills, offering sweeping vistas and terrain that rewards thoughtful course management as much as raw power. The renovated green complexes, with their closely mown chipping areas and enlarged putting surfaces, demand precision and reward creativity in equal measure. The warmth of the East Bay climate means firm, fast conditions for much of the year, with greens — particularly on sunny afternoons — regularly running at pace that surprises first-time visitors.
The club's history extends well beyond its architecture. In 1957, a young Ken Venturi tied the course record of 65 in what became his first professional victory, earning PGA Rookie of the Year honours. The club has hosted professional exhibitions, the Northern California Open Championship, USGA Amateur Championship qualifiers, and US Senior Open qualifying events. It remains one of the Bay Area's most coveted private memberships.
A comprehensive $41 million facilities master plan — completed in 2024 with a grand reopening in June of that year — has transformed the historic Georgian-inspired Clubhouse alongside the course, introducing new dining venues, refreshed social spaces, and modern amenities while preserving the character that has made Diablo a destination for over a century. The practice facilities include the cleverly named Watson's Vista driving range, a secluded and beautifully positioned hidden gem behind the course, as well as an indoor hitting simulator.
For golfers who value history, design pedigree, and an uncommonly welcoming private club atmosphere, Diablo Country Club stands in a category of its own in the Bay Area.
