Review for Donnafugata (Parkland)

Reviewer Score:

I have to confess to being a little disappointed with the opening holes on this course; they seem a little too straight-forward in appearance and are made difficult only by their length. All that changes when you play the interesting 6th, a relatively short par 4 which needs a good tee shot down the right from a blind tee, taking out of play a huge bunker of the left of the green on your approach. The course has moved up a gear in visual appearance by this stage but you still have no idea of what is before when you tee up on the 7th. Hit it long and straight to the brow of the hill from where you encounter the jaw-dropping scene of the green at the bottom of a steep slope, surrounded by water with a great view of the resort beyond. If you have driven it well you may have set up the opportunity for go for the green and a birdie chance, but the risk is huge- water to the right and behind the green which juts out from the deep. This hole marks a dramatic change in the course's appearance and severity of challenge and it's simply awesome from here on. The 9th presents another heart-in-the-mouth approach shot over water in front of the clubhouse before the course heads back into the wilds amongst carob and olive trees. The next stand-out hole is the 12th, a mighty par five packed with drama including a river on the right, a pot bunker in the centre of the fairway, a 90-degree dogleg and an elevated green. A par here is certainly worthy of celebration in the clubhouse later. There follows an easy par four, two neat par 3s and a couple of holes running either side of a reservoir before the finale, a lovely finishing hole running down the side of the resort. There is a fine view of the complex from the elevated final tee that will get you thinking. Don't be too greedy here though. It looks tempting to plot the short route down the left but water lurks menacingly. The right hand side of the fairway is the safer option and opens up the green. @andywaple @drivinggolf
