Eagle Ridge (Andy Dye)

The Andy Dye course is one of four contrasting 18-hole layouts at an extensive sports complex where indoor bowling, basketball, swimming and tennis are all on offer to the members. It’s stating the obvious by proclaiming the 72-hole Eagle Ridge Golf & Country Club facility to be the most comprehensive in the Philippines.

Andy Dye, nephew of Pete Dye, designed this course in a bold and rather confrontational fashion and it opened for play in 1998. “In your face” designs generally split opinions, but most would agree that this course is challenging and at times dramatic. Kimi, our Southern Asia correspondent, comments as follows:

“Without a doubt, it is the most controversial layout at Eagle Ridge. It is a long course of more than 7,300 yards and full of challenges. Golfers simply love it or hate it. You’ll need not only accuracy and distance, but also full knowledge of the layout and proper course management to shoot a low score. All par fours and fives are distinct and it’s fun to attack them. Most greens are narrow, with one or both sides being protected by water, hazards or ravines, so pinpoint accuracy is needed on approach shots. Fairway undulations make flat lies unlikely and the slopes on the relatively small greens make two-putt pars difficult.

I have played more than ten Pete & Andy Dye designed courses in Asia and this course is by far the most difficult. I have heard that Andy Dye daringly designed it to provide Frankie Minoza, the most famous player in the Philippines, with tough, challenging practice rounds. It is also the practice course for the Filipino amateur national team.” To read more about the Andy Dye course at Eagle Ridge Golf & Country Club in more detail, click here to visit Kimi’s website, or scroll down the page to read his course review in more detail.
