Eaglescliffe Golf Club was established in 1914 with a 13-hole course on Yarm Back Lane before moving to its current location on the west bank of the River Tees in 1928, when James Braid laid out an 18-hole course.
Seven holes were used for crop production during World War II and these were never brought back into use but new land was leased to reintroduce an 18-hole layout in 1948.
Henry Cotton then designed another four holes when more land became available in the late 1960s.
Today, the course measures 6,289 yards on a property extending to only around 90 acres, with par set at 72 (35 out then 37 in). There’s only one par five on the front nine then back-to-back par fives at the 14th and 15th.
Highlights include the second (and shortest) of the par threes on the card at the 148-yard 6th; the long, snaking par five 14th (rated stroke index 1); and the right doglegging par four 18th, with three bunkers surrounding the home green.
World Top 100 Golf Courses
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
