East Brighton Golf Club was founded in 1893 as Ovingdean Golf Club. It then became Kemp Town Golf Club before members finally settled on the East Brighton moniker in 1901.
The original 12-hole layout overlooking Ovingdean was expanded to eighteen holes in 1897 then an additional forty acres of land became available eight years later, allowing the club to revise the layout.
Willie Park Junior and James Braid both tendered for the project, with the latter given the contract to carry out the work. The revamped layout was officially opened for play on 23rd May 1908.
Today, this downland track measures 6,381 yards from the back tees, playing to a par of 72 (35 out then 37 in), with back-to-back par fives at the 5th and 6th, then another trio of par fives at holes 11, 15 and 18.
Highlights include the first of the par threes at the 197-yard 2nd (where three bunkers protect the front of the green), along with the long, narrow par four 9th (rated stroke index 1 on the scorecard).
On the longer inward half, the 14th is another tough par four (rated stroke index 2), with Brighton Racecourse defining the out of bounds line along the right side of the fairway.
