Is it really 35 years ago that East Sussex National opened to some fanfare in the relative golfing backwater of Uckfield with its two prestigious courses, the East for tournament play and the West a more private intimate course for members only?

Dont recall many tougher days on much higher ranked links courses that this !The rough was up and plenty of trees scattered so it seemed virtually every miss there was a lone tree blocking your progress - none more so than the first hole, a relatively short par 4 at which I had thought I had hit a 4...

Its a good venue for a society meet up and stay away which exactly what we did. We played the West yesterday and I have to say we were a little disappointed. As my recent review of the East Course would suggest I felt the West course at the East Sussex National golf resort was a little less good than the East.

I say this not because the routing was worse, but rather because the conditioning, especially on the greens, was just a bit less good. Thus the leatherjackets which seem to have troubled many Sussex courses had attracted the crows whose attempts to hollow time the greens were still noticeable. What ...
