Erewash Valley
Erewash Valley Golf Club can trace its origins back to 1905, when a 9-hole course was brought into play. The layout was given over to the war effort between 1914 and 1918, with fairways used for agricultural and grazing purposes.
After the Great War ended, Charles Crompton, the club president, donated a 108-acre property to the club, allowing a new course to be built.
Unfortunately, the construction of the M1 motorway in the 1960s caused massive disruption and a number of different course configurations were tried before Martin Hawtree was called in during the mid-1970s to set out the course that remains in play today.
This rather unconventional layout now extends to 6,448 yards, with par set at 72. Unusually, a round starts with back-to-back par fives and ends with a par three. In between these holes, golfers play back-to back par threes at the 4th and 5th, which occupy a unique quarry setting.
World Top 100 Golf Courses
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
