The term ‘Golfing gem’ is often used too easily in our sport when applied to golf courses, yet it is the fairest commendation that can be given to this wonderful course hidden away in a rural market-gardening coastal area 30 miles north of Porto.
We played Estela on a beautiful October day with only a gentle breeze and yet there was a very slight mist rolling off the ever present Atlantic Ocean.
Estela is not a true links in that the fast-running well-grassed fairways and lush greens are not typical, and nor is the small reservoir that one has to drive over at the 8th hole, but it is a magnificent piece of golfing land. The softness of the grass and the overall maintenance of the course was of the highest order.
It is however the gentle ambience of the place and the excellence of the varied golfing challenges that will live in the memory. Estela is a ‘must play’ that in my opinion is easily the best course in the region. If it was well more well known it would probably be rated above many Lisbon and Algarve courses and sit in the top ten of Portugal.
