Feddinch St Andrews
After more than two decades of stalled proposals, Feddinch Mains received planning approval in February 2025 to become St Andrews' first new golf course since the Castle Course opened in 2008.
Located 3km (2 miles) southwest of the town centre, adjacent to the Duke's Course, the development by Alvarez & Marsal Golf represents a £7 million investment in regenerating a site that has remained undeveloped since planning permission was first granted in 2004.
Why Play Feddinch?
Experience a modern championship layout with practice facilities and luxury accommodation within an eight-minute drive of St Andrews town centre. Scheduled to open in summer 2027, Feddinch will offer an alternative to the heavily-booked St Andrews Links Trust courses whilst providing panoramic views across the Home of Golf.
History of Feddinch
The Feddinch Mains site has witnessed numerous false starts since 2004, when Tom Weiskopf—the 1973 Open Champion who passed away in 2022—first visited to lay out a course design. A partial layout bearing Weiskopf's name was constructed but never completed. In 2017, Scotia Investment Group received a three-year extension to planning consent, which expired in January 2020 without construction beginning.
GPH Engineering purchased the site and proposed a £25 million development in 2020, but contractual disputes halted progress in 2021. Dundee United Football Club owner Mark Ogren subsequently acquired the property before selling to Alvarez & Marsal Golf for £7 million in 2022. The North American firm, whose portfolio includes Hogs Head Golf Club in Ireland and Paako Ridge in New Mexico, submitted a comprehensive masterplan that received approval from Fife Council's North East Planning Committee in February 2025.
Planned Facilities
The approved masterplan includes an 18-hole championship course, a par-3 layout, comprehensive practice areas including a driving range, and a 250-metre clubhouse. Additional facilities comprise a luxury hotel and spa, six detached guest cottages, a halfway house, and a greenkeepers' service yard. Planning officers noted that developers adjusted the design based on community feedback, muting the colour palette and reducing building heights to blend with the landscape.
Construction is already underway on the site, with substantial earthworks visible from aerial views. Tyler Kirsch, managing director of Alvarez & Marsal Golf, stated the approval represents "a major milestone in regenerating a site that has remained undeveloped for 20 years."
Regional Golf Context
Feddinch will become the first course constructed in the St Andrews area since David McLay Kidd's Castle Course in 2008. The location adjacent to the Duke's Course—itself situated 3km (2 miles) inland from St Andrews—positions Feddinch within easy reach of the town's extraordinary golf infrastructure.
Within 5km (3 miles): The Old Course, New Course, Jubilee Course, Eden Course, Strathtyrum Course, Balgove Course, and the Duke's Course provide options from beginner-friendly nine-hole layouts to championship links golf.
10-15km (6-9 miles):Kingsbarns Golf Links (11km south, approximately 15 minutes) offers spectacular clifftop links golf and co-hosts the DP World Tour's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The Fairmont St Andrews resort's two courses (5km north, 10 minutes) provide additional parkland options with coastal views.
20-30km (12-19 miles): Carnoustie Championship Course (23km northeast, approximately 30 minutes) provides one of Scotland's most demanding Open Championship venues.
St Andrews town centre offers accommodation ranging from luxury five-star hotels to traditional guesthouses, with most properties within walking distance of the historic courses.
