Fields Ranch, named for the prior headquarters of Bert Fields’ Ranch is a part of the larger Omni PGA Frisco campus which includes a hotel, ranch houses, shops, restaurants, offices, event spaces and most importantly 46 holes of golf from Gil Hanse and Beau Welling.
Welling and his team were responsible for the master planning of the overall site and worked with Hanse’s team to determine which sections of the property each course would utilize. The courses were constructed at the same time and opened within a month of each other.
The West was designed by Beau Welling to be a fun golfing experience that is challenging but fair for all ages and skill levels. Wide sprawling fairways run up to and surround the greens to increase shot-making options and playability. Although the fairways are wide, most holes have a certain line of charm that will provide better angles and views to the greens to run in shots.
The course initially plays up a hillside and has 75 feet of elevation change culminating at the 4th green/5th tee providing long views of the entire property. The first 8 holes and last 2 rise and fall clockwise around the perimeter of the property while 9-16 navigate up and down the hillside internally.
Welling sums up the land use perfectly when he stated, “we’ve focused on highlighting the prairie setting with native field grasses, live oaks, and mesquite trees as well as created wetlands and habitat areas to build a true natural oasis amid the neighbouring developing urbanity”. Like the East, the West provides a plethora of flexible teeing options (4,166-7,319 yards) for family-friendly rounds or high-level championships.
